Our resourcing process
Your application
Please apply for jobs using the process outlined in our job adverts. HUC does not accept speculative CVs and e-mails via our communications or recruitment mailboxes. All our current vacancies will be advertised on our vacancies page.
HUC must adhere to participation of young people in education, employment or training statutory guidance. Therefore if you are under 18 years please be prepared to show evidence of how this will be met.
Workplace adjustments
We offer a range of shifts in many of our roles which may suit those who are carers or have particular health conditions. The types of shifts which are available will be clear on our adverts.
We are able to make many reasonable adjustments in all roles e.g. different computer mouse, keyboard or coloured overlays on our screens. We offer adjustable chairs in all our call centres and can offer height adjustable desks.
We are currently unable to add assistive digital technology software on to our Clinical platforms.
Welwyn Garden City and some other locations may not be able to accommodate some applicants with mobility requirement however our newer buildings are more accessible.
Our occupational health provider will support us with identifying any specific adjustments you need.
For any reasonable adjustments around our recruitment process, please reach out to us at recruitment@huc.nhs.uk.
Selection processes
Our selection process encompasses various methods such as interviews, presentations, and technical ability tests. The specific assessments used depend on the nature and seniority of the role you are applying for.
For NHS 111 call handlers, we will assess your basic digital skills and typing accuracy unless we can evidence such skills from your education history and career. You can improve these skills using many free courses on-line.
Application shortlisting
We will review your application and evaluate whether we think you would be a good fit for the role. If you identify as disabled and meet the essential criteria for the role (and believe we can make reasonable adjustments -please see above), you’ll be shortlisted for an interview under our guaranteed interview scheme.
Assessment Centre
Some NHS 111 call handler applicants may be required to go to an assessment centre to assess your digital skills and typing accuracy. If you pass the assessment, we will aim to interview you at the same time.
Interviews
If your application is successful, you’ll be invited to an interview. These interviews are often face to face but may be remote via Microsoft Teams. We will explore at interview:
- why you want to work for HUC?
- why you are suitable for the role?
- what kind of person you are (do you align with our values?)
- your skills and strengths
- the skills you are developing or wish to develop
You may be asked about your right to work and live within the UK.
You may also be required to confirm at interview which rota you are able to commit to, if you have not be explicit prior.
After Interview
If you are successful we will phone you to inform you of the outcome.
Our shared services team will send you a conditional offer of employment, subject to pre-employment checks. These will include:
- verification of identity and confirmation of your right to work in the UK
- an online medical screening form
- a minimum of 2 references spanning at least 3 years of previous employment or training history or career, including your current or most recent manager
- original relevant educational certificates and verification of registration with relevant professional bodies
Many roles are subject to Disclosure and Baring Service (criminal) checks.
Conflict of Interest
Please do bring to our attention any personal or familial relationship with any potential hiring staff/managers so that you can be seen to be recruited on merit.
Interview tips
A handy technique for being interviewed is to think about the STAR method:
- describe a situation or task that you have encountered
- explain the actions you took in light of the situation
- detail the results of your actions
Try to vary your answers and keep your responses clear and concise.
Have a go at practicing your answers with a friend prior.
Look at our website before coming to interview.
Procurement of self-employed contractors
