At the height of the pandemic in early May, as an organisation, we felt we should recognise the massive achievements of our amazing team HUC and, as a result, looked into external community awards schemes. Due to COVID-19, many of these were on hold in the areas we serve, however a Hertfordshire scheme was still continuing. All of our colleagues would have deserved an award for their exceptional work during the pandemic and it was hard to single out individuals to put forward. The three colleagues eventually decided on stand for everything that is great about HUC and have been put forward on behalf of everyone within our organisation.

They are:

  • Jan Hatch, Clinical Transformation Lead, who, during February, March and April was a shining beacon of dedication and an inspiration to everyone she works with. Dealing with a quickly changing situation, Jan was instrumental in getting the right processes, new ways of working and IT solutions set up to manage the drastically increased demand on our service. Ultimately, this made sure that patients were managed efficiently, safely and received the best care possible.
  • Linda Gilbert, Consultation Nurse, who only joined last year and, whilst working in Bedford, often answers calls for Hertfordshire. She works incredibly hard to ensure the best possible patient experience and also to make sure that the patient’s family and carers have what they need and are well supported. Many of those who called during the pandemic to seek advice will have spoken to her and benefited from her calm, professional manner, empathy and caring nature.
  • Dave Humphreys, AIHVS Driver, who delivered over 1,000 items of medicines to patients who needed them in one of our home visit vehicles, which were not being used at the time due to face-to-face contact being restricted. He did this both in his work time with approval of his manager and during his spare time – as ever passionate about the patients we serve.

We are delighted to announce that both Jan Hatch and Linda Gilbert have been shortlisted as Finalists in the NHS Hero category and have received certificates.

Congratulations to both of them! Sadly, Dave Humphreys has not been shortlisted, but this does not diminish his amazing efforts within our communities. We will continue to celebrate all our wonderful colleagues and their amazing work for the patient communities we serve.
