The Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) in Cheshunt has been awarded a “Good” rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the organisation which monitors, inspects and regulates health and social care services in England. The MIU is managed by HUC, a social enterprise who also provides NHS 111 and Out of Hours services across large parts of the East of England and the South West.
The “Good” rating follows a planned inspection in November 2022, a full report of which is available on the CQC website. The CQC rates services under five domains, determining whether services are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Cheshunt MIU was rated “Good” throughout.
In particular, the CQC said that
HUC has been operating the NHS 111 and Out of Hours services for Hertfordshire for over 10 years and took over management of Cheshunt MIU in 2019, further expanding their healthcare offering and delivering high-quality and compassionate care to the community.
Cheshunt Minor Injuries Unit is open every day from 8am to 8pm. It offers a walk-in service for people who have minor injuries, including suspected fractures, minor burns and scalds, cuts and grazes and minor head injuries. It is commissioned by the Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Urgent Care Board.
The “Good” rating comes after a particularly successful year for HUC. In 2022, the organisation widened their high-quality care offering further, launching an Integrated Urgent Care Hub in St Albans, accessible for patients via NHS 111 or their GP. This came in addition to offering an NHS 111 service for Cornwall in partnership with Kernow Health CIC and taking over a number of healthcare services previously provided by Devon Doctors in the South West. As part of an overall CQC inspection across the whole of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Urgent and Emergency Care system in early 2022, HUC was found to have good processes in place as well.
Dr Sivanthi Sivakumar, Chief Medical Officer of HUC says, “I am really proud of our latest CQC report; to me, this rating really demonstrates our shared values. We are a caring, dynamic, collaborative and respectful organisation which is deeply embedded in our communities. The “Good” rating in all domains shows the power of teamwork and how our combined efforts benefit the patients we serve.”
