We are incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of our Head of Information Governance, Sarah White, who recently added the prestigious Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) qualification to her impressive portfolio. Sarah is one of our very passionate colleagues who determinedly keeps the system running from an Information Governance (IG) aspect.
Sarah has dedicated her career to demonstrating that strong IG is not a barrier, but a way to move forward. She drives advancement by asking the right questions and creating a framework that allows us to say ‘yes’ safely.
In the world of data protection, it is sometimes joked: the four letters you really need in IG isn’t GDPR, but CIPM. Sarah explains the difference: “GDPR can be quoted by those scaremongering, CIPM, when you’re focused on leading a skilled data protection team to manage any incident thrown at you.”
When asked about what the most surprising thing she learned while earning the qualification, Sarah said, “It was how wide the challenges of the IG landscape really are. Hearing about lessons learned and current difficulties in everything from defence to space was certainly an eye-opener. It’s another reminder IG isn’t a niche concern; it’s a global one that touches every area imaginable, even asteroids”
Juggling an intense job, revision, and life was a significant undertaking, requiring organisational support and “a heavy uptake in caffeine,” Sarah laughs. She notes, “timing helped, I started in the spring when work pressures were lighter, and the lure of summer barbecues wasn’t yet testing my willpower. HUC was brilliant too; they supported my time off to attend the seminars and even funded the course. Having that backing made all the difference.”
What drives Sarah’s infectious enthusiasm is the dynamic nature of her field. “It’s a merry-go-round you never get off; it’s a constant evolution.” She loves being at the crossroads of technology, safeguarding, and people, “helping others to cross safely.”
Ultimately, for a healthcare organisation like ours, taking IG seriously is about our patients. As Sarah reminds us, “our information represents someone’s story, someone’s trust. It’s not just compliance or the need to meet regulatory requirements, it’s compassion with structure and safeguards.”
For Sarah, pursuing the CIPM was a desire to go beyond simply memorising legislation. She was drawn to the practical, operational side of running a team that works with people “on the ground, day to day.”
Thank you, Sarah, for your continued leadership and for demonstrating every day that strong IG is the foundation of patient trust.
