This week, the spotlight is on Erin Barrett, who is a Shift Manager and Pathways Trainer. She is also a multiple HUC Heroes Staff Awards winner.
“Competition is tough. There are lots of great people that work at HUC. I wasn’t particularly expecting it and was quite pleased with the nomination. But when I won the Rising Star category, my reaction was – ‘Oh wonderful!’ Even though I was struggling with COVID back then, that just lifted my spirit,” she recalls.
Erin started at HUC as a Health Advisor, progressing to Coach, Trainer, Team Leader, and Shift Manager. She has been part of the Training team, which jointly won the Best Team award with the Auditing team. “That award wasn’t expected. It totally came out of the blue. The whole team was just chuffed,” she says.
During the pandemic, HUC took up some resilience contracts resulting in more trainers and training sessions being needed for new candidates. Our organisation adapted from in-person and paper forms to everything online, which was a massive transformation.
There have been a lot of exciting innovations ever since – the launch of HUC Academy, new e-learning modules, extensive training, and new apprenticeships. “There is always so much happening at HUC – we never stand still, evolving and adapting to new ways of learning and development,” Erin says.
“We also have Apprenticeship programmes, which are great for colleagues who are looking to progress in their careers,” she adds. “In the past, I have been part of the Health and Wellbeing Focus Group after the Wellbeing survey results came through and I like how each of our views and opinions matters. We are all working towards some common goals, to make a HUC a great place to work,” she says.
What Erin really enjoys about HUC and her job is getting to know colleagues. “As a trainer, you meet a lot of new people, and I enjoy interacting with new Health Advisors, answering their questions especially because I have been there, not very long ago,” she explains.
“Unknowingly, you tend to set an example which others in your team or other teams look up to. I didn’t realise that there are so many people who watch what I do. I remember when I joined HUC, I was very inspired and thought to myself – I want to do that or be like that Shift Manager. It’s good to inspire people around you,” she says.
“Being recognised for all the hard work personally by a member of the executive team is very much appreciated. It shows that you’re being noticed, and also instils new confidence to approach senior management team and talk to them,” says Erin.
Our HUC Heroes Staff Awards are based on our HUC values – Caring, Collaborative, Respectful, and Dynamic. For Erin, all these values have an important place. “It is important to have all these values if you really want to thrive at HUC,” she says.
Well done, Erin, and thank you for all the hard work. You are a true example of a Rising Star!
