Meet Laura, our Engagement and Wellbeing Business Partner
Since joining HUC earlier this year, Laura has placed a greater emphasis on the health and wellbeing of our colleagues. As someone who used to compete in triathlons, cycling has been a recurring activity in her routine. Laura highlights the substantial amount of cycling she did and elaborated on the profound health benefits she gained.
How much did you cycle?
“I used to go out cycling around three times each week in Richmond Park. I would cycle approximately 50 miles which would take between 1 hour and 30 to 1 hour and 45 minutes.”
The benefits of cycling
Laura’s journey began with a passion for triathlons, which is a combination of running, cycling, and swimming. “On the days between my marathon training, I used to cycle. So I used cycling as my cross training, and it is something I have always done. Also, it’s great transport, I used to cycle to get myself from A to B.”
As with all forms of physical activity, cycling comes with its own benefits, “I found that cycling heightened my awareness of details I often overlooked while walking. It contributes to mindfulness through a deeper connection with nature, fresh air and the outdoors.” Laura elaborates.
As a regular cyclist, Laura spoke to other cyclists whilst out and about and also researched the positives of this sport. “Apart from improving physical fitness and overall health, it also increases your productivity. Many individuals have said it made a positive contribution to their mental health too!” she explains.
So what would Laura say to someone who is considering getting into cycling? She couldn’t be more of an advocate and says, “Cycling stands out as an exceptionally accessible sport, requiring only a bicycle and, naturally, mobility. It also doesn’t need strenuous exertion— unless you deliberately want a more challenging experience. This sets it apart from activities like running, which might pose difficulties for newcomers. It also offers a wonderful opportunity for bonding with family and friends and with the presence of numerous cycling groups, it’s a great way to get involved within the local community!”
