Matthew Allen shares his experience on prioritising men’s health this Movember!
November is Men’s Health Awareness Month, and Movember is one of the most recognised initiatives for raising awareness and fundraising. For many people, Movember represents a month of fun with facial hair, but it also holds a deeper symbolic meaning regarding men’s health.
Today, we are excited to spotlight Matthew Allen, a Health Advisor based in Welwyn Garden City, who has embraced Movember with enthusiasm. After noticing that men were less likely to call our 111 services for support, especially regarding mental health issues, Matthew decided it was time to advocate for men’s health.
“Men rarely talk about their own health, probably due to outdated beliefs that they should not display any ‘weakness’. They may also not have the time to do so, or simply feel embarrassed about their health problems, whether physical or mental,” says Matthew. “Of course, no one’s health should be ignored, but the long-standing stigma that causes men to suppress their problems to present as ‘tough’ needs to be dismantled.”
“My family and I have faced several health issues, often delaying medical attention, particularly the men in my family. In my situation, what could have been a simple fix turned into something more complicated because I waited several years to seek help for my “embarrassing” problem. Now, I might need further investigations,” he added.
Many men admit they put off going to the doctor as long as possible, even when they’re experiencing life-threatening symptoms.
“Nowadays, no one should feel embarrassed about seeing a doctor. There’s nothing you could show them that they haven’t seen before, and it means you will get the help you need. Your health should come first.”
Through his fundraiser, initiative, Matthew has discovered his passion for charity work.
“I’ve been looking into doing some charity fundraisers for a while now and this seemed like a fun place to start. I have other ideas in the pipeline, including a sponsored walk to work (all 22 miles of it), or a board game afternoon in the break room. I’ve caught the charity bug and I’d love to keep it going into the New Year!”
