Meet our People: NHS 111 Call Handler Jess Bell

Jess' Story

“When I first joined HUC as an NHS 111 Call Handler in 2018, I was a young mother of two with only GCSE level education and my only work experience was at a military bar,” Jess says. “As an army spouse, I’d also lived most of my adult life abroad at that point.“

What immediately comes across is Jess’s drive to make something of herself. “I really wanted my daughters to be proud of me and to show them that no matter what setbacks you may face, it is never too late to turn it around.” Her passion and enthusiasm are palpable.

A Success Story at HUC

Hers is a true success story: from starting as an NHS 111 Call Handler, Jess took every chance to develop and grow. In 2021, she became a Team Leader and then a Coach. All with huge success. Now she works as an NHS 111 Support Administrator, helping the wider NHS 111 management team with important tasks such as producing daily situation reports and managing the distribution of standard operating procedures. In addition, she managed the rollout of uniforms across our operational teams, which was a great success.

What's next?

But that wasn’t enough for Jess. “In 2021, I applied to start an apprenticeship in Emergency Services Handling, Level 3. This is fully funded by HUC and a real investment in my future. Two years later I’m about to finish my apprenticeship. I’ve learnt so much,  from multi-agency working to the inner workings of our NHS Pathways software and I’ve really felt it helped me grow as a person and as a professional. It’s been a lot of hard work, but I couldn’t have done it without the opportunities presented to me by HUC.“

She’s not finished yet though. “That’s my HUC journey so far. I can’t wait to see what’s next.”
