We are proud to shine a spotlight on Sarah Tester, one of our Clinical Advisors whose dedication, compassion, and expertise are making a real difference through her work with Donate For Defib Weston-super-Mare – a project dedicated to creating awareness about the importance of defibrillators and raising funds to put further defibrillators out within the local community. Sarah, who has more than 25 years of experience in the Ambulance Service and NHS, joined the project in February 2024 after being deeply moved by a tragic incident where a life was lost because a nearby defibrillator was inaccessible. “That moment really struck me; I never wanted another family in our community to go through such a loss when something so simple could change the outcome,” Sarah explains.
Since then, Sarah has played a vital role in helping the project grow from just five available defibrillators in the town to more than 85 across schools, pubs, churches, businesses, and community spaces. The team also ensures that every device is properly maintained, registered, and ready to save lives. Sarah is especially passionate about education, delivering CPR and defibrillator training to hundreds of people at local community events such as Restart A Heart Day and outreach sessions like the Priory Community School Breakfast, where more than 100 people were trained in just four hours.
Sarah reflects on her pride in empowering communities with the confidence to save lives
“Every time someone walks away knowing how to use a defibrillator, that’s another life potentially saved,” she says. “It’s empowering for the community and incredibly rewarding for me.”
The community impact of the project is evident not just in the increased number of life-saving devices, but in the way the community has rallied behind it. Local businesses, families, and even national performers have lent their support. Sarah recalls one fundraising event at a local pub that raised over £2,000 in a single day, soon to result in a new defibrillator installation. “Moments like that show how powerful this community is when we come together,” she reflects. “The generosity has been overwhelming.”
Winners of the BBC Make A Difference Community Award!
The project has already received significant recognition, including awards from Daniel Aldridge (MP for Weston-super-Mare) and the High Sheriff of Somerset. Sarah has also attended meeting with local MPs along with the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset and his deputy. However most notably, the team recently won the prestigious BBC Make A Difference Award in the Community Category!
In March 2025, Sarah also proudly represented the project in Parliament, when they visited for a talk with local MPs showcasing the work of life-saving defibrillator provision – helping raise awareness at the highest levels. Yet for her, the most meaningful moments are still the ones on the ground. “Seeing families install a defibrillator in memory of a loved one is so emotional. It turns grief into something positive that will protect others, and I feel privileged to be part of that journey with them,” she shares.
Looking ahead, Sarah has big hopes for the project’s future. The team’s vision is that everyone in Weston-super-Mare will always be within a three-minute walk of a defibrillator. Plans include making currently restricted devices fully accessible 24/7 and launching a Defibrillator Shop & Centre of Excellence to raise funds, host CPR/defibrillator workshops, and expand training opportunities for local businesses and communities. “We don’t just want more defibrillators, we want people to feel confident to use them. Knowledge is just as important as equipment when it comes to saving lives,” Sarah concludes.
She also volunteers with Great Western HeartStarters, a programme run by the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, with whom Donate For Defib proudly partners with. The project also collaborates with Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance Charity, and through the Avon & Somerset Bleed Kit Partnership, has begun installing bleed kits alongside many of our defibrillators. This year, Sarah completed the Basic Life Support Instructor Course (BLSi) through the Resuscitation Council UK, enabling her to officially teach life-saving skills.
The project has received overwhelming support, from marathon runners, national singers, and families taking part in the Defibrillator Legacy Programme. This programme enables families to donate a defibrillator in memory of a loved one, with a commemorative plaque installed above. To date, more than 25 families are involved, with Sarah and her family working with the project to install a defibrillator in memory of her mum along the seafront in Weston-super-Mare.
A huge well done to Sarah and the project team for the incredible work they are doing to educate and save lives!
